The Department of Arctic Geophysics of the University Centre in Svalbard have vacancies for two PhD position for four years each within the Space Physics group focusing on optics of airglow and aurora, respectively.

UNIS provides education and carries out scientific research based in Svalbard within the high Arctic, and benefits greatly from this geographical location. Approximately half of the staff and students are from abroad, and all teaching is in English. UNIS is located in a new building in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, with very good access to modern laboratories and equipment. UNIS is a stateowned limited company. Description of the vacant positions
The optical observatory (KHO) is important for the ongoing research and teaching in both middle and upper atmosphere at UNIS, and should form the basis for the research work for the successful candidates.

The candidates may focus on either
a) Middle atmospheric physics
The announced Ph.D. project should focus on the middle atmosphere and its interactions with both the lower and upper atmosphere by the use of optical instrumentation in combination with other available instruments and techniques on Svalbard. The candidate is expected to contribute to the acquisition and quality control the 30 year mesospheric temperature record from KHO, constituting one of the longest times series of airglow spectra in the world.
b) Upper atmospheric physics
The announced Ph.D. project should focus on the polar ionosphere and magnetosphere, with emphasis on auroral physics using optical instrumentation, augmented by incoherent scatter radar data and satellite data.

Areas of special interest are energy transfer from the solar wind into the magnetosphere/thermosphere; ionospheric irregularities and plasma structures; ion/neutral outflow. The Space Physics group at UNIS has recently secured infrastructure funding for new ground based optical instrumentation, and the successful candidate is expected to exploit these resources, and participate in data acquisition and developing methods for data handling and analysis.

Common for both candidates
The candidates should be competent in the use of optical instrumentation. They are in that context also expected to participate in ongoing programs for investigating the middle and upper atmosphere by other instrumentation such as f. ex. radars, artificial electron heating, lidars and rockets.

The candidates should also be prepared to contribute to the ongoing operations at KHO.It would be beneficial if the candidates have knowledge of at least one programming language, as well as operating systems. Furthermore, the applicants background from previous work on Svalbard and other Arctic regions will be stressed. It is important that the candidates have the ability to work independently, have a positive attitude, and are flexible

Qualifications
The successful candidates must have a Master degree in Physics or equivalent in a field related to the above described projects. Due to logistics, the candidates need to have driver licenses.
Admission to the doctoral programme at one of the Norwegian mainland universities is a condition of employment in the position as PhD student. The final plan for researcher education shall be approved and a contract signed with the mainland university at the latest six months after commencement. The applications will be prepared by the candidates and the supervisors.

Employment Conditions for Ph.D positions
The employment contracts are of 4 years and include mandatory duties of 25% each.
The successful candidates must live in Longyearbyen. They are expected to contribute actively to ongoing scientific activities in the department. It is also expected that the Ph.D. students take an active part in the advancement of their field of research, and they must also be willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense.

All salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government's University salary scale. Ph.D students starts at salary step 48, which currently is a gross salary of NOK 383 900. As a resident in Svalbard an annual allowance of NOK 26 400.(Svalbardtillegg) will be added to the salary. A Social Security contribution of 2 per cent, to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, will be deducted from the salary. Income tax on Svalbard is 8 per cent, plus 7.8 per cent toward National Insurance coverage.

An expert Committee appointed by the Managing director of UNIS, will evaluate the qualifications of the applicants. The Committee will review the applications in detail, and is the basis for interviews. The final appointment will be made by the Appointment Committee.

Nuclear security is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. The spread of nuclear weapons to unstable and hostile states, the risk of conflict between nuclear armed nations, and the potential for terrorist groups to acquire nuclear arms all demand new thinking and creative policy solutions. The Nuclear Security Fellowship Program, made possible by a generous grant from the Stanton Foundation, offers younger scholars studying nuclear security issues the opportunity to spend a period of twelve months at the Council on Foreign Relations’ (CFR) offices in New York or Washington, DC, conducting policy-relevant research.

Eligibility

The Nuclear Security Fellowship Program seeks to stimulate the development of the next generation of thought leaders in nuclear security. A Wellcome Trust funded position is available for 3 years in the laboratory of Dr Sherif El-Khamisy to characterize the mechanisms of the repair of topoisomerase-mediated DNA damage. Oxidative stress and abortive activities of DNA topoisomerase 1 form a major source of DNA single-strand breaks, which are the commonest type of DNA lesions arising in cells. Defective repair of these breaks has been associated with hereditary neurodegenerative disease (El-Khamisy et al., Nature, 434: 108-113, 2005). Cells have employed different mechanisms to repair such breaks, including the hydrolytic cleavage of the phosphodiester bond between the stalled topoisomerase and DNA. The prototype enzyme for such an activity is TDP1, which is also involved in the repair of a variety of oxidative 3'-termini and mutation of which is associated with the neurological disorder SCAN1. Despite this important catalytic function fulfilled by TDP1, it remains together with the newly identified enzyme TDP2 (Ledesma et al., Nature, 461:674-8, 2009) the only known human enzymes that display this activity. Here, we will characterise and identify novel mechanisms for the repair of DNA topoisomerase-mediated and oxidative stress-induced DNA breaks, using a combined approach of yeast genetics, biochemical analysis, and whole animal studies. We will also define the impact of the defective repair of these breaks on neural cell fate. Candidates should have a PhD in molecular biology/biochemistry/cell biology. Broad experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques is essential. Experience in qPCR, chromatin IP, siRNA, and yeast genetics is desirable, but enthusiasm and adaptability are more important. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of motivation and ability to deliver high quality research outputs.

National Humanities Center Fellowships 2011-2012

The National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities during the academic year, September 2011 through May 2012. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Young scholars as well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply, but they must have a record of publication, and new Ph.D.s should be aware that the Center does not support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. The Center is also international and gladly accepts applications from scholars outside the United States.

Stipends

Fellowships are individually determined, according to the needs of the Fellow and the Center's ability to meet them. The Center seeks to provide at least half salary and also covers travel expenses to and from North Carolina for Fellows and dependents.

Facilities and Services

Located in the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina, near Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh, the Center provides an environment for individual research and the exchange of ideas. Its building includes private studies for Fellows, conference rooms, a central commons for dining, lounges, reading areas, a reference library, and a Fellows' workroom. The Kroschewski and Barral groups study the role and mechanisms of cellular diversity in cellular communities, using mammalian cells in the context of tissues (Kroschewski), and yeast cells (Barral). During the formation of organ substructures like cysts the establishment of cell polarity needs to be well coordinated between cells. Preliminary data indicate that within cell aggregates on their way to cysts, one individual cell emerges as the master, initiates polarization, and then helps directing the proper polarization of the others. The goal of this project is to determine what are the cues used by the cells to dictate which of them becomes the master. Particularly, we will investigate the possibility that this decision correlates with the asymmetric segregation of aging determinants to one of the cells during cell division.

Therefore, we will investigate the intriguing possibility that an age-related hierarchy influences cell-cell interactions and the role of the individual cells in the community. In yeast, aging determinants include extra-chromosomal DNA circles. Learning from what is known in yeast, we will investigate the possibility that similar processes contribute to cell diversity in mammalian cells as well. At the technical level, the project will include the use of 3-dimensional cultures conditions, high-resolution 4D microcopy and RNAi technologies. This PhD-project will be carried out as a joint effort between the Kroschewski and Barral groups.

Both groups are located in a highly international and multidisciplinary environment. Good communication skills and the ability to rapidly learn new methods are required. The candidate will be asked to integrate into the MLS PhD program (http://www.lifescience-graduateschool.ch/index.php?id=17).

IVHM is a pioneering centre of excellence with core partners Boeing, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Meggitt and Thales, MoD, Alstom Transport and EEDA. The Centre aims to enable the incorporation of IVHM technology into UK and global businesses; generating awareness of the benefits in business productivity, environmental impact, and vehicle performance.

This project is seeking a researcher to join the team currently working on the Centre's Design System project. The successful applicant will work on consolidating the methods and toolsets used by the different industrial partners and develop a set of good practice, which will be tested through real life case studies.

This project is initially for one year. However, this could lead to a project extension or further training opportunities.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a first or upper second class UK honours degree in an engineering related discipline. A strong engineering background with a good understanding in condition based monitoring is desirable. The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program is an opportunity for young teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while strengthening the instruction of foreign language at U.S. colleges and universities. The FLTA is an integral part of the Jordanian Fulbright Visiting Student Program.

The FLTA Program is a nine-month, non-degree program aimed at strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, and some high schools, while providing current or future teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of U.S. society and culture. FLTA Fellows also interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects.

FLTA Fellows must return to their home countries upon completion of the program. FLTA Fellows may assist in or teach up to two language classes and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies. The remaining coursework should relate to their careers in English language teaching. FLTA Fellows will also be expected to facilitate cultural events, language clubs, and language tables. FLTA Fellows will be required to attend an orientation in the U.S. during the summer of 2010 before arriving at their U.S. host institutions in August 2010. FLTA Fellows will also be required to attend a mid-year enrichment workshop that will be hosted by the Department of State's Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau (ECA) in the U.S. to share and discuss foreign language teaching best practices and their current teaching experiences with other FLTA Fellows.

Eligible Candidates

- Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English, and at minimum must possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree by 29 April 2010 with all official university transcripts available. A Master's degree is highly desirable at many U.S. institutions.

- Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a score of no less than 213 (on the Computer-based TOEFL - CBT); 79-80 (internet based TOEFL - IBT) or 5.5 (overall score international English language testing system - IELTS). All nominees should take the TOEFL immediately to allow sufficient time to receive the official score reports.

- Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism.

- Applicants must be residing in Jordan throughout the nomination and selection process.

- Applicants must hold the Jordanian Citizenship (Nationality), a valid Jordanian Passport and must have a permanent residence status in Jordan at the time of application.

- Candidates for the FLTA applying for or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible. Persons who are citizens of both Jordan and the United States are also not eligible.

- Applicants must be at least 21 years old and no more than 29 years old at the time of application.

- FLTA Fellows are required to return to Jordan upon completion of the nine-month program. The Binational Fulbright Commission in Jordan and the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York will not support any extension requests for fellows.

- The FLTA program does not support dependents or family members. By extension of this policy, pregnant candidates may not participate in the program if the birth is due during the program period.

- Sound physical and mental health: Those selected for a Fulbright grant are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized.

- Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity and professionalism. Applicants should demonstrate leadership skills, an ability to motivate students to learn, and an interest in teaching Arabic language and culture to U.S. students. Potential candidates should have a desire to meet people and become a part of the host U.S. community by participating in community events and campus activities. FLTA Fellows should also be creative and self-reliant team players, who are able to maintain excellent relationships with U.S. faculty, staff and students.
- Applicants should be representative and responsible citizens who can contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture of their own countries and thereby contribute to understanding between the people of the United States and Jordan. One of the goals of the Program is to place FLTA Fellows in all 50 states and at diverse institutions. Fellows must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically-diverse academic institutions.
- They should also demonstrate the cross-cultural sensitivity and flexibility needed to adjust successfully to life in the United States. Potential applicants must be outgoing and dynamic individuals with a great sense of humor.
- Preference may be given to those applicants with little or no previous experience living or studying in the United States. Participants must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically diverse U.S. academic institutions in order to meet the goal of the FLTA Program to place participants in all 50 States and at diverse institutions.

- Any applicant who is seeking a U.S. degree should not apply to the FLTA Program.
- Applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, gender and/or physical impairment.

Methods:
The tasks of the study, an adaptation of the method of Lathrop et al. (Analytical Biochemistry, 2007) for the screening of potential ligands, testing and characterization of ligands by Biacore and ELISA and the introduction of a suitable affinity chromatographic procedure.
The ideal candidate must be a course in biotechnology, biotechnology or biochemistry with a deep knowledge of bio-analytical testing, interaction assay (ELISA, Biacore) and a basic understanding of chromatography.
Fluent in English and good communication skills needed to succeed in the international environment and multidisciplinary project.

"Mini" Master Classes are a way some hunters are working Seek an Edge

October 11-If an MBA is an important resource to get a good job, hope to hundreds of students in the Twin Cities a mini-MBA, it will at least give a small advantage in their job search.

At the University of St. Thomas, the mini-MBA program is 52 hours version of Master of Business Administration, usually a two-year program. The mini-MBA program is focused more on the people who want to improve their skills and update their curricula. Most students who are enrolling for the class are unemployed or fear the possibility.

Of the 24 students in a mini-MBA class that began last month, 18 are unemployed. These children are not fresh out of school if their demographic composition with those of the other 4000 students from St. Thomas nondegree programs, activities, whose average age is 44, and nearly nine out of 10 have a bachelor's degree or better in the four 10, that a degree of specialization. Of environments, in sales, marketing, information technology, insurance and real estate sector, students, the program gives them an advantage.

The Programme

Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, is a graduate and Honorary Fellow of St John’s College. He is widely acknowledged as the architect of the economic reforms that have helped propel India onto the World Stage. In honour of Dr Singh St John’s College, the University of Cambridge launched the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships in Delhi in 2007. These awards will enable academically outstanding Indian students to come to St. John’s College, University of Cambridge to study for doctoral degrees in subjects like Science & Technology, Economics and Social Sciences.

Applications in Aerospace Engineering and Energy Studies will be of particular interest

The applicant should be:

* The applicant should be:
* An Indian national with a valid Indian passport and currently based in India
* Below 35 years of age as on 15 December 2009
* Not already had significant exposure to UK education or received UK government funding.
* Should hold a Master’s (postgraduate) degree from a reputed/recognised India university/institution with a First Class award (UG and PG) in the relevant subject/field
* Evidence of leadership qualities (to be assessed from personal statements e.g. extracurricular activities and/or evidence of having made a difference to the country/society/participation in symposia in the relevant subject, or peer reviewed publication in the area.)
* Keen to pursue and should have identified a full time Doctoral Research degree from the University of Cambridge commencing by September/October 2010
* Fluent in spoken and written English
* Able to fulfil any other admission criteria laid down by the university.

It is the responsibility of the applicants to identify a suitable Doctoral programme and supervisor at the University of Cambridge, apply for a place for September/October 2010 and secure admission.

2. Applicants to visit the Board of Graduate Studies (BoGs) website and make formal application to the University at the same time as to the Dr Man Mohan Singh Scholarships.
3. Applicants to select St John’s College as their first choice College on their BoGs application form.
4. Applicants to indicate on their BoGs form that they are applying for the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships, but also to complete the section applying for funding from the University.

• Only those applicants who get an offer of admission at St John’s College will be eligible for the award of the Scholarship.

Selection

Candidates for these scholarships are selected through a process of short listing from the applications received by the British Council, followed by personal interviews, which will be held in New Delhi .

Subsequent to the interviews the selection committee identifies the required number of candidates for the awards. The decision of the selection committee will be final. Selection results will be communicated within a month following the interview.

Post selection

Pre-departure briefings, UK visa and travel arrangements for the selected candidates will be co-ordinated by the British Council.

Beauty Students can earn a scholarship for cosmetic AHBAI Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation. The fellowships are awarded $ 250, awarded in amounts totaling $ 5,000.

Cosmetology students must be enrolled in or approved by a modern state Cosmetic Training Center, accepted before the application of science. To receive a scholarship, students must have completed 85 percent or more on average at school and must have completed at least 300 hours. The extracurricular activities, attendance and previous contests / prizes will also be discussed.

In 1991 the AHBAI Fred Luster, Sr. Education Foundation in honor of the deceased Fred Luster, Sr., member of the Board of Trustees of the AHBAI and founder of the Chicago-based Luster Products, Inc. To date, the Foundation prior to the closing of U.S. $ 500,000 for scholarships awarded.
